Listing Details: 1970 Chevelle SS 502 Pro-Touring Street Legal Outside, NASCAR Mean Inside

$79,995 Seller's Agent
Description:

Bowtie horsepower can be found at most every cruise night parking lot.  Despite the sea of customized Malibus, your car buddies will take notice of this Rat-powered ’70 Chevelle NASCAR racer for the street.  No one else will have one either.

Think of this Chevelle as a full-bodied Sprint car on asphalt.  Dubbed "the Chevelle from Hell", this hell cat touts a Jim VanGordon built drysump 502CI Bow-Tie belting out 680 horsepower.  If you want a street car that screams 200mph NASCAR on the inside and pro-touring custom on the outside, this one can’t be beat!

This is no cobbled together pretender, the builder/owner is experience creating the Mechanix Wear Speed Truck Challenge. The heavy circle track influence is one reason for the many oval and road racing–style components you’ll see on this Chevelle.

Also known as the HEMI builder or Mr. Norm's GSS Darts, Jim Van Gordon Racing assembled the Rat starting with an iron Bow-Tie block with a 4-inch GM steel crank, JE pistons, 9.7:1 compression, and a serious mechanical roller cam that Van Gordon prefers to keep under wraps. In keeping with the corner-turning theme, they added a complete dry-sump lubrication system that included placing the oil tank behind the driver seat for weight consideration. A Dart single-plane intake supports a 1,000-cfm Holley HP–series carburetor that’s topped off with a slick carbon-fiber cold-air inlet and valve covers from K&N.

Transferring all this power to the rear tires is the responsibility of a complete Tilton multi-disc clutch assembly that is hooked to a modified Richmond four-speed. She also boasts a Richmond six-speed transmission.  Ed Moore Drivelines built the custom driveshaft that ties directly to the full-floater Speedway Engineering 9-inch sporting 3.40 Richmond gears.

By turning the hex shaft inside the trunk, you can quickly tune the rear suspension to compensate for different track conditions. This is a common ritual on a NASCAR Winston Cup racer, but it’s rare to see this in a street car.

The mechanical side of this monster is so impressive that it’s easy to overlook its visual side. The body shell was carefully fitted over the new tube chassis. Shaved driprails and added Harwood front fiberglass bumper, as well as a hinged rear spoiler complete the NASCAR look.

This hellcat is the brainshild of award-winning custom painter Mike Face.  If you've read a car magazine this year or walked the halls of SEMA, you've admired his work.  Mike treated the whole massive Chevelle body to multiple coats of Flex Products’ ChromaFlair Color Shift Burnt Fire paint that changes hue in varying light conditions to give the look of a life-sized "Hot Wheels".  Just the same, if you love the build, but not the color or rims, they can be changed for an extra fee.

If you like the idea of this 1970 Pro-Touring Chevelle read all about it in Chevy High-Performance.  If you want a monsterous sensation, yank it through corners, eat up road-courses and circle tracks.  Put the pedal down at the Pony Express top-speed race in Nevada. What else can you do with a 700hp Rat stuffed into a full-tube chassis?  Anything you want.  That's what.
