This "R" code 428 Cobra Jet 4spd XR-7 is an early car, built October 18th, 1968, one of only 130 428 CJ 4 speeds ever produced. Fresh from a sympathetic restoration, each mechanical component has been gone through, pains taken to preserve as much of the original patina to the car as possible. She still wears most of her original paint, and 100% of her original interior trim and exterior body panels. She is a must see!

Exterior: Cougars with good sheet metal are hard to find, even harder with ALL of her original body panels. She still even wears 50% of her original Medium Metallic Gold paint. The faded hood was repainted and the blended into the fenders. Fresh “428” call-out stripes complete the look. All the trim and badges are in original, unrestored condition. Overall panel alignment and panel gaps are very good. Overall, fit finish, and paint condition bare witness to a car that has been well cared for and carefully preserved her entire life.

Interior: The interior is likewise remarkable. Normal leather cracking on the driver's seat aside, the interior is time capsule crisp. The burlwood accents and chromed bezel work shows a mellow patina, noticeably free of scratches, scrapes or excessive wear, even on high touch surfaces. All gauges read accurately and all lights and accessories are in working order.

Engine Bay/Chassis: Drivetrain and suspension have been returned to OE Stock original specifications. The engine was completely restored to factory stock inside and out. The engine bay was entirely detailed to factory new specifications, including the controversial but correct valve covers. The engine and transmission are numbers matching and original. Every internal engine component, external accessory, nut and bolt is date coded and correct. The suspension is likewise original and correct. The owner opted to rebuilt and re-rivet the original tie rods rather than use aftermarket replacement parts. Rear-end, brakes and other components were likewise refurbished to retain originality. The exhaust was not installed at the time of photogaphy, a concours correct system is installed and included as part of the sale. The '68 steel wheels pictured here have also been swapped out for restored original date code correct '69 steel rims, shod in OE correct white letter tires.

Mechanical: There is a slight leak in the vacuum canister for the headlight doors, common with Cougars. Regular driving will keep the headlight doors down, even when parked. That aside, everything on this car works as it did the day it was delivered. All lights, accessories, and driveline systems work. This is a car you can jump in, turn the key and drive coast-to-coast.

In addition to being highly original and mechanically impeccable, her documentation is unimpeachable. Papers include original factory invoice, order book, window sticker, every warranty ticket, and even the original dealer order sheet. Finding a genuine 428 R code Cougar 4spd is rare enough, finding one that is numbers matching is remarkable. Discovering one that is also this original and this well documented is a one of a kind opportunity.
