"...God set the dangerous stage for this high-stakes drama and called the whole wild enterprise good." ~John Eldredge, Wild at Heart, Discovering the Secret of a Man's Soul

Show Your Auto decided to build a 1989 Mustang LX community outreach car to set a positive example for those young to our hobby and support the charity, Brakes For Brett.  Brakes For Brett is a not-for-profit dedicated to educating young adults of the danger of driving too fast and to encouraging all adults to become organ donors.

We chose Brakes For Brett, because Brett Karlin's story is one we can all relate to. Each of us have done or know someone who has taken a hazardous risk with an automobile.  Few of us had the benefit of an adult involved in the hobby to show us the right way to go racing, so we “run what you brung” on the streets and back alleys. Brett Karlin and Andy Short were no different except for the fact that Brett, a seatbelt wearing passenger, was killed on July 30th, 2004. There were no drugs or alcohol involved in this accident, only speed.  Read more in this NBC News story.

Andy Short, Brett's best friend and the driver that night, has since shared his story with more than 30,000 high school students in Illinois alone.  In addition to being shown the consequences, kids like Brett and Andy who have a passion for automobiles need to be directed to safe and appropriate places to go fast. The Brakes 4 Brett Car is a race prepped street car designed to run in SCCA sanctioned events adhering to Solo II Street Prepared autocross and also be able open track SCCA Improved Touring open track rules.

When we aren't showing the kids how to “take it to the track” you will also see us at MANY local, regional, and national meets, showing the short film documentary “Flying Over Cuba” created by Brett's cousin, Jonathan Skogmo.  Flying Over Cuba” shows on the impact Brett's death has had on community and the Chicago street racing scene.   Check out the calendar to see where we will be with the B4B car.

The Brakes for Brett Community Outreach Car started out as a clapped out '89 LX that was drag raced hard and left for dead.  She was rust free and did come with a '94 5.0L drive train dropped between the fenders.  We've kept a blog of our progress on the project as well as a photo album of the car(s) as it has gone through it's transformation.  We have come along way since we embarked on this adventure in March of 2005.  Below you will also find a list of parts we still need to complete the car by spring.  Volunteers and private donations are certainly welcome.  If you'd like your logo to join our current list of supporters, corporate and club sponsors are welcome.

Parts Donations are welcome.
